Don Stranathan, well-known in the lung cancer community, sometimes is referred to as Superman or Dr. Don. He is well-informed, tenacious, kind, and is always happy to share what he knows with other lung cancer patients. In 2009, he was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.
On Saturday, June 22, he celebrated his 10 year cancerversary by hosting a Celebrating Survivorship party and fundraiser on his friend’s ranch in Northern California that he has helped restore over the years. Over 200 people from across the country attended to help mark the occasion including other lung cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, pharmaceutical company contacts, family members, and friends.
Don shares that surviving a stage 4 lung cancer diagnosis was unheard of back in 2009. He credits his 10-year survival to the breakthroughs made through research since his diagnosis, the support of family and friends, and GO2 Foundation’s programs including the Lung Cancer Living Room and Patient Support Services. Don explains, “The Living Room has helped educate me about my lung cancer and treatment options and the importance of testing, and the GO2 Foundation team has put me in touch with the top doctors and researchers in the lung cancer community.”
Don’s family-friendly celebration included a band, nationally known lung cancer advocate speakers, a taco truck, yard games, and plenty of food and fellowship. The event collected thousands of dollars to help other lung cancer patients by funding the programs that have benefited Don. The event costs were covered by generous friends, family, and Don himself.
Don exemplifies how one person can inspire hope and make an impact on others in the lung cancer community. You too can make a difference. Raise awareness and funds for lung cancer by hosting your own unique fundraiser! And don’t forget to attend one or both of the August Lung Cancer Living Room sessions.
